World record breaking yachtsman, Alex Alley, joined us at Portsmouth Football Club for the Network Pompey Business Club networking lunch!

Having been sailing most of his life, Alex has always been fascinated by the sense for adventure. Exploring that fascination led him to take part in the ‘Global Challenge’, a round-the-world race covering 32,000 miles in a 22 metre boat with just 18 crew members.

Unfortunately for Alex and the team, it wasn’t plane sailing. Just before leaving for leg 2 of the race – Buenos Aires to Wellington – a crew member decided to quit. Not resting on their laurels, the team powered on and set off. Quite unbelievably, just one week later, another crew member had to quit due to health reasons. Racing in some of the most treacherous seas in the world with 18 crew members is hard enough, let alone with 16. However, bravely taking life into their own hands, they once again continued.

Then, the unthinkable happened. In the middle of the Southern Ocean another crew member suffered a nasty arm break. Having to cut the leg short and return to land cost them unfathomably; the race was effectively over. They were at the back of the pack having lost priceless hours at sea. But they had to start again, after all it was a round the world race.

Despite countless setbacks, Alex explained that what shone throughout was the resilience, courageousness and unity shown by all crew members in some of the most difficult conditions in the world – traits everyone can take into a business environment. Alex – alongside previous guest speaker Paula Reid – uses the unique skillset he’s developed into a new venture, Adventure Pyschology. They work with whole organisations, leadership teams and individuals to prepare them for future uncertainty – to go ‘Knowingly into the Unknown’ – offering a range of Adventure Psychology services, bespoke programmes and off-the-shelf products.
