During this Member Workshop, Founder of Network My Club, Bradley Hatchett, sat down with LinkedIn expert Jodie Goodchild, Founder of KnownFor to explore how to make LinkedIn work hand-in-hand with in-person networking.
Here’s a recap of the key takeaways from their discussion.
Bradley: A lot of members use LinkedIn but aren’t sure how to get real results. What’s the best place to start when you want to improve your presence?
Jodie: Start with your profile. Think of it as your shop window – it’s often the first impression people get of you.
Your headline should say what you do and who you help, not just your job title. The “About” section is your chance to tell your story and show your personality. People connect with people, not job titles.
Bradley: How important is consistency with posting on LinkedIn?
Jodie: Consistency is key, but that doesn’t mean posting every day.
Start with once a week. Focus on quality over quantity.
Share your experiences, lessons learned, or thoughts that will help your network. The more you show up, the more people will remember you – especially when they need what you do.
Bradley: Many people say they struggle with engagement. What’s your advice there?
Jodie: You can’t just post and disappear. Engagement is a two-way street.
Spend 10-15 minutes a day commenting on other people’s posts. Not just “great post!” – add something meaningful that builds a conversation.
The algorithm rewards genuine engagement, and people will start to notice your name regularly.
Bradley: Let’s talk about connecting online after meeting someone in person. How can people bridge that gap?
Jodie: After a networking event, send a personalised connection request. Mention where you met, thank them for the conversation, and maybe reference what you spoke about. It makes a huge difference.
Don’t wait too long – ideally within 24–48 hours. It keeps the connection warm and natural.
Bradley: What about using LinkedIn before an event?
Jodie: Brilliant question. Before an event, look at the guest list if you have access to it.
Find people you’d like to meet and engage with their content ahead of time – like a few posts, maybe comment once or twice.
When you meet them in person, you’ve already built familiarity. It’s like a warm introduction before you’ve even shaken hands.
Bradley: How do you view LinkedIn in relation to networking?
Jodie: LinkedIn is the biggest networking event that never closes. It’s the digital extension of your in-person networking.
The magic happens when you use both together – connecting online before events, building relationships offline, and staying visible online after.
Bradley: Any final piece of advice for people who want to make the most of LinkedIn?
Jodie: Treat it like a community, not a competition. Celebrate others, share useful content, and be yourself.
LinkedIn rewards authenticity more than anything else.
