Lecturer in sports coaching science and author of Blowing the Whistle: The Psychology Behind Football Refereeing, Stuart Carrington, joined us at Twickenham Stadium for the latest Twickenham Business Club networking lunch.
Prior to writing the book, Stuart worked as a coach at two Premier League football clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, before pursuing his interest in refereeing. Stuart’s fascination started when he delved deeper into the psychology of refereeing a high level sports match.
The position of a referee has stark similarities to those in high-level business positions, when put under extreme pressure – in a referees case having 40,000 fans, 11 opposition players and a manager screaming at you – it’s unthinkable that a human should be expected to make the right decision 100% of the time. Having to make challenging decisions on the spot with multiple distractions is something that every person can experience on a daily basis, it’s how you deal with those pressures that define the outcome of the situation.
Stuart’s book, ‘Blowing the Whistle: The Psychology Behind Football Refereeing’, offers a deeper insight into the world of refereeing, while presenting clear psychological takeaways for anyone – sports fan or not! Find out more information and purchase the book
